Author, singer, spiritualist found truth in goddess myths

As she lay dying on the bed inside her Santa Cruz home, her last words were, "It's better now."
And with that, Shekhinah Mountainwater, a key figure in Santa Cruz's alternative spiritual culture, died Saturday after battling uterine cancer for more than a year and a half.
She was 67.

She was surrounded by friends and family. On Monday they recalled her impact. They said it was not only in the way she lived her life, but in the way she left it: courageous in the face of pain. Then, finally, peacefully.
She was a healer, a tarot reader, a teacher, a singer, a musician, an author, a goddess, a pagan, a witch.
"The good kind of witch, not the bad kind," her friends and family pointed out Monday, occasionally motioning to her body, which lay a few feet away inside a plain wooden coffin in the backyard; occasionally they spoke to her.

"She was dedicated to her work and changing the world," said son Frey Faust, who followed in his mother's artistic footsteps by becoming a dance teacher. "She was a creative mother, and she was very disciplined as an artist herself. Nature was important to her. Values were important to her. She was never interested in monetary wealth"
While thousands of Santa Cruz residents could fit that very description, what made Mountainwater's life so interesting is that she dedicated her life to empowering women long before it became fashionable.

And she never let up.
And it wasn't a political movement along the lines of feminism, although that was certainly important to her.
It was a spiritual movement — one whose roots can be traced to an ancient time, long before Judaism and Christianity "came to be," said daughter Angel Brandwein, who, as a child growing up in Ben Lomond, would sing and dance with her mother and older brother in front of the old Cooper House in downtown Santa Cruz.

"She was always at the forefront of any new movement whose purpose was to enlighten and unravel the patriarchal regime," said Brandwein, who now lives in Phoenix and works at Arizona State University. "She was the original beatnik, the original hippie; she was always anti-establishment"

She sang and played acoustic guitar in the same coffee houses as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell in the 1960s in New York's Greenwich Village, before eventually moving to Los Angeles in the early 1970s, then settling in Santa Cruz, where she lived for 35 years in the same house on Effey Street.

Born Ellen Adler on Oct. 24, 1939, she was raised in New York and attended Bard College for a few years before she set off on her own in an attempt to become a folksinger.
Over the course of her life, however, Mountainwater would adopt a long line of names before settling on her final one, Shekhinah — "the female aspect of god in ancient Judaism," her daughter said.

"Her name changes represented her journey in life at the time and the discovery of a new part of herself," she added.
In 1991, she wrote "Ariadne's Thread: A Workbook of Goddess Magic," a book about feminist spirituality and magic.
"You may have heard of the five steps or keys to magic," she writes. "See, know, will, dare and keep silent. Those correspond to the five elements of the witch's star, as spirit, mind, action, emotion, and body"

Or, perhaps, a more prophetic line would be this one: "Great are the life forms that let us eat them/Some day our bodies too will be food/Great is the goddess who makes things so yummy/Great is the woman who cooks it so good"

In December 2005, however, Mountainwater was dealt a blow when she was diagnosed with cancer. Soon, she found herself having to mix alternative methods of healing, such as herbs, massage and acupuncture, with modern-day practices such as chemotherapy and radiation.
The chemotherapy may have taken her beautiful hair, friends say, but it didn't take her soul, or her fire, or the goddess within her.

"She taught us how to find the goddesses in ourselves. She taught us how to hold ourselves sacred," said Juniper Spring, a close friend. "That's what made her so special"
What neighbor Cindia Boyle said she will miss most of all is their day-to-day friendship.
"She was always here," said Boyle. "And now she isn't"

Greetings My Fellow Ghosties,

Well, as promised,

I told you ALL that you would be the first to know if something transpired after last weeks *2 minute Bed-Shaking-Fest*. It did.

As I mentioned in a previous entry, I think it is very important & relevent to jot down or even LOG what you think may be a paranormal event...

The date, day of the week, time, moon phase, and anything else that seems pertinent at the time. By using this technique, it may help you to decipher a message being offered up by the other side. Otherwise, it can feel like we are swimming aimlessly in a paranormal soup.

I have been experiencing the BED SHAKING PHENOMENON, as many of you know, for about a year and a half now...

Never before moving to this home (And I DO LOVE living here, BTW).

I must admit that this past weekend I was a bit tense after the 2 minute

Shake-a-Thon...

Wondering if anything was going to go down or not?!

Apart from MORE bed shaking & seeing a figure out of the corner of my eyes, nothing else happened...

(Although as a side note, I will tell you that I often feel like I see a man in his 20's, with brown hair & a leather bomber jacket on).

Perhaps, my mind is playing tricks on me...Perhaps not.

Anyway, last night my bed started shaking really HARD and within, Oh a minute or so, I could hear the now familiar screaming, swearing, & threats from my neighbor's residing in back of my home....

Somehow I knew on the inside this was IT....

This was the latest event I had been *warned* of. I actually spoke allowed and said,

"Bed-Shaker"...

As I affectionately call who or what ever does this...

"I hear the fighting and thank you for alerting me"...

It seemingly responded by shaking the bed again really hard. So, I turned down the volume on my TV to keep an ear on the escalation of violence.

Only a few minutes past, and the telephone rang; startled I answered it. It was my other neighbor (next door on the left). She said she had, had it with those neighbors and called the police after she heard punches being thrown while trying to put her 3 little ones to bed...The cops showed up within about 5 minutes and the arguing stopped...

But guess what ???

The bed KEPT shaking.

Now, I was confused!...

There went my theory of the bed shaking as a warning!

I went to bed early and tried to tune out the shaking...It's a little hard to tune out your bed shaking, though.

Well, then this morning at 7 ...

It turns out someone opened the door of my other neighbor's (the one that shares the duplex with me) car door and just left it wide open. Nothing appeared to be stolen. It was very odd!Last month someone came up on the second story landing of our building and tried to pull the screen completely off of her BEDROOM window. The No Parking sign on our property was then "tagged" with gang grafitti. After our landlord repalced the sign, whomever this was, tagged the Stop sign (knowing I suppose it would take the city weeks to fix it).

As it stands today, I feel this is a Being (Spirit or Ghost, not sure) that is warning me of impending danger, however, I will continue to keep a journal of phenomena to see if I can discern ANY other patterns whatsoever.

And ofcourse, YOU know I will update you when and if I have something new to report.

BED SHAKING...AGAIN! What the ...???

Well, My Fellow Ghosties...

It's time for an UPDATE regarding the state of my home & the bizarre things that occur therein.For the most part, things have been relatively quiet here regarding possible paranormal activity & phenomena. When it DOES occur I jot it down in a journal...I recommend you all do the same. It will help you see if there are any patterns, etc...

So, last night I crawled into bed and was reading PSYCHIC SHIELDING by Caitlin Matthews. It was a little after midnight when that old familiar rumbling started...Only this time it intensified quickly and I saw my knees shaking and pillows jiggling. It felt like someone was standing over my bed, bent down, and shaking it - HARD...I will not lie to you ALL and say it was No Sweat...It scared me!

However, I tried to remain calm and approach the situation as scientifically as possible. So I turned my head while the bed was shaking, stared at the clock, and proceeded to time the length of this duration...It was just over 2 minutes straight!As it seemingly was coming to a climax ( and this is where it sounds absolutely bizarre), I felt someone/thing push me through my pillows, like from within the pillow... into the middle of my back...

It did not hurt but was strong enough to be unmistakable.After this happened, I went over to the computer and sat down to write a note to a friend about what had just happened...Then my desk and chair started shaking.

So far, I have been able to connect STRONG paranormal activity in this home with the turmoil that goes on with my (behind me ) neighbors. It seems almost like a warning of what's about to come.So, I will sit tight & wait...And when & if something happens ...Y'All will be the first to know!!~ROSIE

REMOTE VIEWING & ASTRAL PROJECTION

Many of you are familiar with the term Astral Projection, but how many of you have heard of Remote Viewing before?I first learned about Remote Viewing while reading a series of highly controversial books by author Peter Moon regarding what was dubbed "The Montauk Project".

Remote Viewing is a skill developed by which the viewer can "see" objects, locations, and persons in places far from where the viewer physically is. Remote viewing takes psychic development to a different level.

It seems that ANYONE can be a Remote Viewer, once properly trained. It also seems as if there is little one can do about being "viewed", either by shielding or other protective mechanisms...

Anyone, if properly trained can "view".

Just as you would learn to play the flute by learning the music scale, etc...

So, in an effort to not be out-smarted by the enemy the program of remote viewing was born. So, after a bit of a lull in activity here at the ol' homestead, last night I was home ALL alone and up late as usual with my old pal Insomnia, perhaps some of you have met.... :0)

I was reading in bed about, none other than psychic protection, and all of a sudden...

WHAM-O...

It was like some drunk had stumbled into my bedroom and hit the side of my bed hard. This time, I must admit...

I was a wee-bit scared & guess what?

It happened 1 more time...

At which point, I turned on the TV LOUDLY and stopped reading for the night.
